Site Context: 

Calmsley Hill City farm located in Abbotsbury, Western Sydney is a working farm and community resource that provides the community and those from beyond with the opportunity to experience the agricultural practices, interact with the variety of farm animals within a rural environment with large landscapes in an urban setting. The purpose of this location is educational for students in particular and provides a recreational experience that allows the community to see farming, animals and the environment firsthand. This community resource is a valuable resource for students to observe and investigate relationships among individuals, places and environments that can support year 3 through allowing them to connect with this geographical concept explored in both the classroom and real world environment.

Historical Significance:

 

  • The land was historically associated with the Dharuk people before European land grants
  • John Jamieson received land grants from 1806 onward, and cattle and sheep were later grazed there
  • In 1947, the Big Brother Movement acquired the farm and used it to train young British migrants in agricultural work. They developed dairy, poultry, piggery, orchard and market-garden activities
  • In 1984, Fairfield City Council established Fairfield City Farm, which conducted educational programs
  • The site became known as Calmsley Hill in 2009 following its lease arrangement with Western Sydney Parklands Trust.
